Happy International Allyship Day!
Here at LEAD Network, we are passionate about the power of allyship for creating fair, equitable workplaces across the European Retail and Consumer Goods industry. Allyship is not just a buzz word, bolt-on, or promotional message; but a core component of everyday, effective leadership. It’s an ongoing practice of perspective taking and inclusive leadership that ensures that no one gets overlooked or left behind.
We see allyship as mission-critical; enabling women across the industry to make impactful contributions. And the truth is, when women succeed, everyone benefits. Research consistently shows that fostering inclusion not only enriches lives (for everyone) but also drives measurable business results—from reducing turnover to boosting performance.
Despite compelling evidence and a shared vision for where collectively we want to be, the reality is sadly a long way off. The World Economic Forum estimates that reaching true gender parity at the current rate of progress will collectively take us 123 years… Why? Because systemic barriers continue to limit progress across our teams, organisations, and society. We cannot accept this, we must do better.
Whilst systemic barriers can sometimes feel a bit unwieldy, do not under-estimate the power that each of us holds, with the potential to start a snowball effect! Small adjustments in the way we choose to behave CAN have a significant impact on how valued others feel, and how enabled they are to succeed. As a community of allies dedicated to ‘Doing, Not Trying’ we CAN accelerate the pace of change.
